Learning and development

A structured training plan will be developed for you, which will form part of your Performance Support Agreement. The training plan will include the following elements:

  • induction program
  • core skills
  • other courses
  • access to studies assistance program (optional).

Induction program

folderThe first two days of your employment with Medicare Australia will include formal induction training.

Day One will include:

  • introduction to your buddy, supervisor, mentor and fellow graduates
  • introduction to Medicare Australia's CEO
  • building tour
  • completing paper work associated with your employment (eg. superannuation forms, tax file number declaration forms and salary forms)
  • introduction to the team members in your work area
  • arranging computer logons, telephone and a security pass

Day two will include presentations by a senior manager from each division and will provide graduates with the opportunity to gain a better understanding of what Medicare Australia does, our corporate objectives and the services we provide to the Australian community.

The induction program is a key part of Medicare Australia’s new employee support framework. The program encompasses tools and guides to assist you and your manager to ensure all the bases are covered when you join the organisation.

In line with Medicare Australia's future direction in the area of Learning and Development, our induction program is both an innovative and blended learning solution for Medicare Australia’s graduates.

Core skills

apple boxThe following three courses must be completed as part of the graduate program:

  • project management
  • organisational and time management skills
  • writing in Medicare Australia.

Mainstream Graduates will have the option to include additional courses into their training plan:

  • presentation skills
  • advanced writing skills
  • ministerial writing
  • minute taking
  • influencing and negotiation skills.

The IT Graduate training program is administered jointly by the Quality Assurance Test Management Team and Application Development Team Leaders within Medicare Australia. The following training courses will be provided:

  • testing techniques and processes- functional testing
  • performance testing techniques
  • HP Quality Centre 9.2, Winrunner and Loadrunner toolsets
  • Java, Cobol, Delta and Websphere training modules

Other courses

apple on headIn addition to mandatory training you can participate in further courses such as Knowing the Business which gives participants the opportunity to see how a Medicare office and Information, Call and Processing Centres operate. Other courses relevant to your work area can be discussed with your supervisor and included as part of your Performance Support Agreement.

Graduates will also have access to courses conducted by the Australian Public Service Commission, for example:

  • career directions workshop
  • leadership skills
  • strategic thinking
  • teams and leadership.

Studies assistance program

graduates parkMedicare Australia will encourage you to continue formal tertiary studies which will benefit you and Medicare Australia.

Study assistance is made available to all Medicare Australia graduates for approved courses of study, in accordance with Medicare Australia policy and guidelines.

Key features of the study assistance program include:

  • paid study leave to attend any examinations held during normal hours of duty, including reasonable travel time
  • paid leave of up to five hours per week for study activities
  • additional leave for external and thesis students
  • financial assistance.

An approved student must provide their manager with a statement of results at the end of each semester or academic year and evidence of successful completion of study and qualification gained.

Given the workplace demands placed on graduates during the program, you may prefer to wait until the program concludes, before considering further formal study.
