About the Graduate Program

Program objectives

Our graduate program is the best way for us to attract educated and talented people to our organisation. Our graduate program also lets us develop a group of potential leaders for Medicare Australia.

Our graduate program will give you a fast and comprehensive career development program and help you move from University to the workforce. We give our graduates the opportunity to develop a broad range of skills and knowledge that will let you operate successfully in a range of positions within the organisation.

The main features of our program are:

  • competitive starting salary of $50,169 per annum (APS 3) plus up to 15.4 per cent superannuation
  • progression to an APS 4 with a salary of $57,205 per annum upon successful completion of the nine month program
  • assistance with interstate relocation costs (if applicable)
  • customised learning and development program
  • comprehensive induction program
  • three work rotations
  • dedicated Senior Executive mentor
  • SNoG membership (Social Network of Graduates) for ACT based graduates.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for our graduate program you must:

  • be an Australian citizen (applicants selected for interview must provide evidence of Australian citizenship at the interview. Eg. Birth certificate, Australian passport, citizenship certificate.)
  • have completed a minimum three year Bachelor's degree with a credit average or higher
  • have completed the degree within four years of the start of the program (between July 2005 and July 2009)
  • be able to start work on Thursday 6 August 2009

Successful applicants must also undergo a mandatory police records check and pre-employment medical with Health for Industry. These will be arranged on your behalf.

We are looking for graduates with a commitment to serving the Australian public and providers. If you are dynamic, innovative and customer focused, with a genuine passion for contributing to improving the delivery of programs and services to the Australian community you are just who we need.

We are looking for graduates with bachelor degree qualifications from a variety of fields, in particular:

  • finance
  • commerce
  • business
  • communication and marketing
  • IT
  • health related fields

Program structure

Our graduates are rotated through at least three roles or distinct projects throughout the nine month program.

The Mainstream Graduate Program will give you exposure to our corporate and program functions. This is a great opportunity to apply your skills and knowledge in a variety of areas and get a solid understanding of how Medicare Australia operates and serves the Australian community.

The IT Graduate Program will provide you with specialist training across system development lifecycle frameworks including testing technique processes and automation toolsets in particular HP Quality Centre 9.2, training in Cobol, Delta, Java and Websphere language.  All IT positions are located in Canberra.

At the beginning of each placement/rotation, you will develop a Performance Support Agreement and work plan with your supervisor. This agreement will set out the objectives and tasks of the position and identify the skills and knowledge you will need to develop.

At the end of each rotation your supervisor will report on your performance, which is an opportunity for you to discuss your performance targets and developmental needs.

Conditions of employment

Medicare Australia is an Australian Public Service agency and our people are employed under the Public Service Act 1999.

The terms and conditions of employment are set out in the Medicare Australia Collective Agreement 2008-2010.

Our graduates start at the APS 3 classification, with a starting salary of $50,169 per annum.

If you succesfully complete the graduate program, you will be advanced to an APS 4 with a salary of $57,205 per annum

If you are interested in advancing to a higher level, above an APS 4 (at the completion of the program), you can apply for these positions and compete with other candidates. Our  graduate program is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to make you a competitive candidate for promotion.

If you join our graduate program you will not be able to apply for promotions or temporary performance opportunities during the first nine months of your employment.
